Posted by: C on November 4, 2004 12:43 PMI didn't vote for our little same sex proposal nor do I even think we need to get involved in making it a vote. I am morally opposed to that lifestyle, but you see unlike the writers of those bill I believe in a God that would not turn thier back on ANYBODY. You want to live that way fine, and I will stand by your side to defend for your right live free. Because that is what MY Jesus would do. I do not know how they believe. More people should be angry about that then Bush winning.
Posted by: Brad on November 4, 2004 01:10 PMSo many Jesus's, so little time.
A friend sent this to me. Sing it during Thanksgiving:
How beautiful for fascist guys,
And Fox News airway claims.
For fundamentalists and terrorists,
And all the fruit's in pain.
America, America, god blesses only thee,
So crown thy crooks, and burn your books.
From siege to bloody siege.
By the way, a buzz flash reader made a funny comment about this map:
Maybe we should be seriously thinking about this. I bet if we got this on the ballot in all 50 states that even the jesus states would vote to let us go. We'll tell 'em its a moral values issue.

That's encouraging, and it distinguishes you from the average evangelical, "strict constitutionalist," state rights Republican hypocrite. No sarcasm -- I mean this as a compliment.

That sounds like the Jesus I know.

I and maybe other progressives give you credit, Brad, for your principled stand on the attempt to legitimize discrimination against gays. But it's not possible to separate that from the broader Bush agenda, where he exploited a harmless minority to sow hate-based votes. The GOP knew it needed increased turnout among "moral" voters to counteract the increased turnout by those of us who believe Bush is undermining our most cherished democratic principles and institutions while bringing death and misery to a region that already despises us. If morality is the whole point, I hope everyone who voted for Bush will take one moment to reflect on whether God really could forgive the president for 100,000 dead Iraqis. And then ask what kind of God would view that kind of wanton behavior as less objectionable than love between consenting adults, which harms no one. That massive gap in logic is what leaves the rest of us so disgusted. I believe anyone who claims to be moral yet lacks such a sense of proportion is at best deluding himself and at worst sinning in the gravest sense.
See, it's not that progressives lack morals -- far from it. We're fully prepared for a moral debate that can't be won by waving a flag or the Bible. But it's hard to reason with people trained not to think for themselves but to do what authority figures tell them. I'm encouraged to see you have the capacity to question conservative dogma.

take off, eh!?
Thanks VC. The world is black and white. I mean right is right and wrong is still wrong. I think in next few elections you will find that question asked "where do you stand on gay rights?" This will take over for asking people where they stand on aboration. Despite what some think(none really here). Roe V. Wade will not be overturned. I also think the media needs a new topic that will stir people up to read thier papers or turn into thier news. No one should fall for this tatic. We and I do mean we are all too smart here to fall for the old "if it bleeds it leads" thought pattern.
