you know the bit where it goes...

From the department of too many lists comes this, "The 50 Coolest Song Parts." While any list that Phil Collins tops is a list I'm not interested in, I must admit that bit is pretty memorable.

My favorite bit? The shrieking sliding-scale weirdness before Peter Murphy starts singing in Bauhaus' "Bella Lugosi's Dead" Oh. Wait. No. It's the bit where part where Ambrosia Parsley (yes, that's her name) of Shivaree whispers in "Goodnight Moon." What's yours?

Current fave: Bass instrumental break by Danny Thompson on Richard Thompson's "One Door Opens." I listen to those 8 bars over and over.

An older fave: Martin Belmont's riff that anchors "Love's Melody" by Ducks Deluxe. Ooooh yeah.

Even older: The outtake of "I Beg of You" on The Complete 50's Masters, where Elvis leans down hard and draws out "h-o-l-d my hands and promise" during the bridge. This version blows away the official one, which is great in its own right.

Ummm... how's about the opening feedback buzz of the Beatles' "I Feel Fine"? Or the dual guitar break on Clapton's "Bad Love"? Or the harmonies at the opening of the Beach Boys' "Catch a Wave"?

song PARTS? Ya'll are such hipsters, but I'll play...

How about the opening guitar sequence and spoken word of "Black Sunshine" by White Zombie?

"Gripping the wheel,
His knuckles turning white with desire,
The wheels turning like slugs from a 45,
True death, 400 horsepower..something something
This. Is. Black. Sunshine."

cue guitar....

ok, so I forgot some of the lyrics, but...

One of my recent favorites:

I'm sick and I'm twisted,
I'm broken you can't fix it
