but i'm not dead yet

My host has been up and down like a Whack-a-Mole today. Seems okay now. However, if you've sent me e-mail to mikewolf.net you might want to resend. Ugh.

And you want me to move to this host? ;)

Dreamhost was down all morning, too, and I had a couple of non-responsive Blogspot pages. It's a Monday.

So you never got the fascinating e-mail with my 2004 Mixed League Illuminated Donkeys fantasy team?!?!?!

Linus - This is Dreamhost. They've been so good for so long but have had a couple of frustrating outages this month.

K Dawg - Nope. Send it again, please! I had my "other" league draft last night. It was like shooting fish in a barrell. Almost takes the fun out of it when you get Pujols in Round 5.

In all fairness to Dreamhost, they can't take blame for script kiddies doing this sort of stuff...

Dear Everyone,

Our apologies for the repeated outages today. It turned out our router problems _were_
caused by a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack aimed at a site we hosted (note past
tense). It was a pretty massive attack, more than doubling the amount of inbound traffic we
normally receive.

As a result, our routers were overwhelmed. Due to the nature of the attack and the
circumstances surrounding it, we were not able to immediately trace down the cause of the
problems. We have now blocked the target's IP address and are keeping a close eye on our
inbound traffic so that we can act quickly to prevent this from impacting customers any
further.

We are also in the process of adding new routers and upgrading our existing routers to
provide more capacity so that in the future such attacks will be easier to withstand - so that
we are better able to react to similar attacks and take action before wide-scale problems
develop. Due to the unprecedented scale of this particular attack, we were caught
unprepared and for that we apologize.

I loved to play Whack-a-Mole! It was the best. Of course, it was a lot more fun to cheat and use both your hands instead of that stupid padded hammer. I was like Monica Geller on that thing. My friends had to pry me away screaming, "I have the best reflexes, no one can beat me! I am THE BEST! EVER!"

Mike, I figured out it was Dreamhost after I posted (duh) when I ran a traceroute.

My ISP, Panix, was one of the first to ever get hit with a DOS attack; this is some years back. It's my thinking that we really need to lynch a couple of spammers, crackers and virus types - just the proper ones, you know, like the guy behind Xupiter. Kind of get the point across. The world would get so peaceful after that.

Well, a guy can dream.
