bounce right back

As another bit of public service, do you want to know a really good way to bounce back from the aforementioned bad night? Invite unexpecting friends over to watch "Eraserhead." They will first think you to be completely insane but then slowly warm to the charms of Lynchian bizarreness at it finest.

The new DVD release (available only at davidlynch.com) is both amazing and maddening. The print looks better than I could have ever imagined. The unskippable and absurdly long menu intros, however, are enough to make me leary of watching it again. The feature-length interview with Lynch is perhaps more surreal than his masterwork...

My Teutonically-inclined TA during my NYU film freshman year hated me almost immediately after she screened her favorite film for us in class -- Eraserhead -- and soon thereafter I very vocally pronounced it the most absurdly horrible thing I had ever witnessed. I still hate this movie. There are some films that are so bad I have screened them several times just to figure out where they went so horribly wrong -- Chasing Amy comes to mind -- but Eraserhead is not one of them.

Uh, I now have a feeling you're not the smashing-beer-bottles-on-forehead type of cheerer upper. Without regard to whether it's any good, Eraserhead is about the last movie I'd see when depressed, but that's just me. 8^)
