a new addition

I've decided that little Alison really needs some company during the day. She's a very social cat and loves to be around other people and, believe it or not, other animals. I had thought about getting a kitten for her to play with but now I'm thinking about getting a rabbit. That's right, a rabbit.

Apparently rabbits and cats can do very well together despite what you would think in terms of a hunter-prey sort of relationship. Of course the rabbit can't be tiny and the cat can't be of the vicious mouser variety. My little Ali is a horrible mouser. She once "caught" a mouse in my old house in Atlanta and simply played with it. She didn't even once try to bite it. I guess she thought it was a new toy.

If I go through with this hare-brained scheme (groan) I'll end up adopting from The Carrot Patch here in Norwalk. Any thoughts?

I know this great stewed rabbit reciepe that I have been dying to try out. Let me know when you get "supper" that is what I will call it. My family and I will come there and cook you a feast.

As a former Bunny Owner, here's a few words. You can train a rabbit to use a litter box... to pee. But forget about #2. You'll be picking up little round turds forever. And though rabbit poo is the least disgusting of all possible pet feces, you'll find it everywhere.

Other than that, bunnies are very sweet. They don't live nearly long enough, though. I think you might want to get another kitty instead. Cats are very social and thrive in pairs.

KB - Yeah. I'm beginning to think that the bunny turd quotient is enough to ward me off. Ali loves to bat little round things around you see... Eww.

Brad - I'm sure that's supposed to be a joke. However it's not funny whatsoever. Regardless of whether or not I'm a vegetarian and an animal rights activist, we're also talking about a pet

Rabbits are notorious for chewing on everything as well, electrical cords, furniture, etc. Just something else to consider.

I vote for getting another cat -- just be sure to love on Ali extra lots so she won't resent her new sister or brother.

Add another Cat, Rabbits are just poop machines with fur:) Now two words of advise, if your cat is male, get a female, grown or kitten. If female get a kitten, male or female or another adult female. Its the whole natural dominance thing. Male cats are the superior ruller of the home. Anthracite as you recall was the elder male in my home, two female kittens 4ys appart became his house mates and he was still king and accepted them, once he established the rules. Bituminus"bitsy" is now the dominant leader in the house, she has also become a lap cat again, something she hasn't been since she was a kitten 9yrs ago. I miss anthracite, but what I don't miss is maintaining a litterbox for three, its a big difference from 2 to 3, don't ask me why but it is. Do it but don't expect it to be all love and kisses at first, expect the usual hissing and raised fur and furreled tails, also don't intervine they will come to terms in a few days or a week or two.
