Which is the greatest lyrical contribution of the last fifty years - "Thunder Road" or "Eleanor Rigby?" Those are the only options I'm allowing right now. Winner gets, uh, Hanson. Vote and discuss.

Posted by: patricia on December 18, 2003 01:01 AMEleanore Rigby ain't no slouch, but hands down, it's Thunder Road. Street poetry at its best. If nothing else for one of my favorite lyrics ever: "Show a little faith, there's magic in the night/You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright/oh and that's alright with me."
Posted by: Bruce on December 18, 2003 10:02 AMThe lyrics are ok on both songs. But it's the MOOD both songs induce - through the combination of music and lyric - which make them *amazing* songs.
The power of E Street makes my knuckles numb, from holding onto imaginary Triumph Bonneville handlebars. Springsteen's vocal sounds like he's screaming above the roar of the wind, blasting in our faces. We get pulled over at the Jersey state line, for speeding.
The Martin string arrangement transports me to the locked gate of an olde English cemetery. I peer in at the mossy headstones, read a few; then somebody spoke and I went into a dream...
