a point of clarification

My aforementioned love of Ray Davies' "Celluloid Heroes" has company in the Kinks' canon. I firmly believe that there is only one song that can challenge "Eleanor Rigby" as being the finest pop song ever written. "Waterloo Sunset" is, to my ears, absolute perfection. Tell me I'm wrong...

You're wrong.

"Zipcode" by Saint Etienne.

You're not wrong.

Was there ever more love in a song?

I have lots of "greatest pop songs" - they tend to alternate from day to day. Those 2 you mentioned are fine candidates. Others:

September Gurls- Big Star
Claire - Rheostatics
Happy Together - The turtles
Good Vibrations - Beach Boys

In fact, I'd have to say, as of today, Vibrations is at the top of the class. Every time I hear that beginning... ah, pop music perfection.

Mark and I have tremendous affection for this song. It's pretty perfect.

Waterloo Sunset's fine. ;~)

Their "Silvie" also happens to be the 2nd best disco song ever. Nice to see another Saint E fan reads this Twang boys screed.

So let's dance, the "Last Dance", 2nite.
What else do you think would, could, be #1?

Jim, don't you mean Good Vibrations by Markie Mark? "Canyafeelitbaby? I can too."

And Mike, I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm sure you're wrong...

Mikeypoo, please tell me you're not still trapped in some manhattan elevator or some dark, stinky subway car...
