rudolph valentino looks very much alive

I still think the fact that the Kinks' "Celluloid Heroes" wasn't a gigantic hit is one of the great crimes of the 20th Century.

It really is Ray Davies at his best -- humor and pathos. His two lines about Marilyn Monroe said more than Elton's and Bernie Maudlin's entire shlocky "Candle in the Wind" song. On the two occasions I've been to Hollywood, "Celluloid Heroes" flashed in my mind repeatedly, because he so perfectly captured the tatty glory of a place that reverse snobs poke fun at so lazily.

I think the Kinks as a whole are underrated. I credit my ex with very few things, but introducing me to the Kinks is one of them.

I can think of several things I'd give your ex credit for, Susan. None of them are complementary to him...

He did also like Merle, if I recall, and I have him looking goofy in the background of a picture Bruce took of me with Elvis Costello. Maybe he had a couple of good points. Somewhere...

I remember that photo. It was at the Tabernacle when you were stalking Elvis ~ but that may not be descriptive enough...
