spread the love

Cory's addition to A Case For Song is now up. Check it out. It begs another interesting question, too.

Music is, to me, one of the greatest things to share with another person. Like Cory, I enjoy introducing people to new musical experiences. Lord knows that I've acquired most of my musical preferences from others. My obsession with Elvis Costello certainly stems from Melinda Terry. My penchant for '80s gloom started with my gang of pals labelled "The Mutants." My Steve Earle and alt-country fetish probably owes more to Dennis than anyone else. I've really "discovered" very little on my own.

However, I'll always have that night in 1990 when I stumbled into the 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia just wanting to see live music. That was the first night I experienced the amazing power of Vic Chesnutt and it's world that I try to share with others. Whenever given the opportunity I wax poetic about Vic. I know that many of you regulars have been subject to such ranting. Sorry :-)

So what music do you like to help others discover?

Oh, and who wants a copy of my own creation - "Humble & Gracious - A Vic Chesnutt Primer?"

Keep the essays coming!!

Stuff I wish you would get around to discovering, so I can talk to you about them:

Recent stuff: the latest from Cat Power and K. Hersh.

Not too long ago: Boz Scagg's "Dig," Mekon's OOOH! & Spoon's "Kill The Moonlight."

Long ago and far away: Taj Mahal, Procol Harum & James Gang!

Stuff that I discovered on my own is bland stuff for your readers.

World Party is the only non-mainstream act that I own most of the CDs and discovered on my own. I'd heard a couple of songs played on Album 88 and picked up a cassette of Goodbye Jumbo for $3 at the student center at Tech in '91(?). I was only able to convert one friend to listening to him (in '97), but she really likes him too and has partially converted another one of our friends.

Of course there's Andrew Dorff who opened for World Party in '97. Yeah. We haven't been able to convert ANYONE to him, even though Mike did pick up the full CD for me - yay Mike.

Gee...Split Enz, Crowded House, Neil Finn, Tim Finn, Finn Brothers...Is there a pattern here? lol. My enjoyment of this music has led me to people that they've worked with, or who've toured with them. Dave Dobbyn, a New Zealander, and Paul Kelly, who's an Aussie, I think. Both has strong raspy vocals and heartwrenching songs.+

I want a copy of the Chestnutt primer! I'm ashamed to say that I never did go and check him out while I was in Athens. I was too busy going to see Vigilantes of Love.

Frank Zappa. But then, you knew that. If only folks could hear the amazing music other than the popular doo doo ka ka stuff. Fortunately, Zappa cover band Project Object played here Friday night and several co-workers met me there. I'm now feeding them CDs, and they're hooked. Bwaaaaha ha ha ha! Great show, too, although I'm the only one who lasted from 9:30 p.m. until 2 in the morning when it was over. My eyes still hurt.
