We in NYC like to think that we're a bunch of musical hipsters. We embrace all the kewl bands and look down our noses at the rest of the mainstream. How then to explain the Allman Brothers' upcoming thirteen night stand at the Beacon? Really. I'm not kidding.
Posted by mikewolf at March 10, 2003 10:32 PMThat is seriously messed up. Are they not playing anywhere else in the region to justify 13 nights in a row?
Posted by: ssg on March 11, 2003 10:58 AMThe Allmans have been doing a two-week stand at the Beacon in March in NYC since at least '92, if not longer, to the best of my or any of my friends' recollections. I saw them in '95, just as I was coming out of high school and stuck somewhere between grunge and classic rock. It was a great show. Best of the Allmans is still an exemplary collection to chill out to and make guitar faces in private.
This year, however, I'll be busy polishing my hipster badge at Television or The Datsuns or something...but the Beacon is so close to my house...I'm so conflicted!
Posted by: Jesse on March 11, 2003 02:29 PMReally? I had no idea. I thought I'd escaped that when I moved from Georgia.
I think it'd be funny if Elijah (now calling himself "P. Exeter Blue") Blue showed up with his little pop-goth band Deadsy to open. Dad would be so proud...
Posted by: mrw on March 11, 2003 04:10 PMWhatever. You know I love the Allman Brothers.
Posted by: Meredith on March 12, 2003 08:09 AMAnd you live in Atlanta and grew up in Savannah. It's geographical, my dear, you had no choice.
Posted by: mrw on March 12, 2003 08:28 AMIs that why I love World Party and Jeff Buckley so much? What about Bing Crosby? Is he the "natural" choice for a Savannah/Atlanta-bred girl?
Posted by: Meredith on March 13, 2003 11:34 AMNo, no. You've refined your tastes, Missy. However, you do have no choice but to take a liking to the Allmans. The same way this Michigan boy has no choice but to have a soft spot for the gawd awful Bob Seger and the infinitely cooler Iggy Pop and MC5.
