I went to see "Gerry" yesterday. I'm still not sure what I was supposed to get out of it (other than a nap). There's no plot to speak of so there's really not much to discuss here. It was pretty to look at for about twenty minutes. It's the other ninety minutes that could have done without.
So will somebody go see it so we can discuss it? Warning -- it's not for everyone. About 25% of the people at the Angelika walked out yesterday.
I didn't hate it, I just didn't think the whole film was necessary. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood to be visually soothed. Van Sant sees it as some sort of cinematic meditation. To me meditation is more than seeing how long you can hold a shot before the audience just gives up. Maybe I just didn't allow myself to be moved. I dunno.

ZZZZZzzzzzzZZZzzz (That's me, inevitably falling asleep during the movie)

Posted by: Meredith on February 25, 2003 06:50 AMI was just reading what Matt had to say about it....
Critics have been wildly mixed on the film, and Matt told BBC Radio that, indeed, it's rather quirky. "I would describe it by saying it's two guys who walk into the desert together -- two friends who become disoriented. And that's simply the kind of premise of the movie."
"We took it to Sundance and the reaction was everything from 'This is great' to 'You'll only ever see this movie if you're being tortured.'"
I'll wait for the dvd release on this one.
