The lovely Patricia pointed me to this quiz. Believe it or not, it said that I should live in Stamford/Norwalk, CT. I didn't cheat at all. Isn't that weird? Anyhow, people often ask me what Stamford is like. That link a better description than what I normally give.
So take it, would ya? See where you should be hangin'. You can make up an address and whatnot at the end. Annoying, I know...
Posted by mikewolf at January 24, 2003 02:52 PMOkay. I took the test. Charleston, Savannah, and a bunch of cities in Florida. Guess I'm not the big city girl I thought I was...hmmm.
Posted by: Cassie on January 24, 2003 03:56 PMNo. You're just the cold climate wuss that I love you for :-)
Posted by: mrw on January 24, 2003 04:02 PMThe quiz says I ought to live in Milwaukee. Chicago came in second. I think the reason Chicago didn't place first was due to my answer about the cost of a home. I picked a range that I can afford (and can be had here in Chicago) but that figure is far below the average cost for property here. Rounding out the top five were Oshkosh (by Gosh), WI; Providence, RI; and Hartford, CT. Lots of other WI cities were mentioned later. Am I really a Cheesehead?
Posted by: Dennis on January 24, 2003 09:39 PMPortland, Oregon was my number one. That's kind of funny, since I f'ing HATE rain. Most of the others were in California, though the #3 city it gave me was Little Rock, Ark.
You've gotta be kidding me.
Posted by: Kirsten on January 25, 2003 12:32 AMAs you well know, I didn't end up moving there but when I was planning on moving to Milwaukee I don't think it would have been a bad choice, really.
Sure, it's cold as hell every winter. However, the cost of living is pretty low. I could have rented a HUGE loft for the price that I pay for my apartment here. Of course, I wouldn't have been making as much as I do here.
There seem to be some pretty good restaurants and a surprisingly good art museum there, too. Of course there's also relatively easy access to Chicago. Madison is also nearish and seems like a pretty cool college town.
At the end of the day, though, it still is Wisconsin...
Posted by: mrw on January 25, 2003 09:28 AMOh, but Dennis you would HATE Hartford. That one came up on mine, too. New Haven would be okay but Hartford's got nothin' going on.
It seems that CT is coming up a LOT for people who take this. Weird.
Posted by: mrw on January 25, 2003 09:29 AMNew Haven was sixth on my list. It's interesting because I was interested in a job at Yale a few weeks ago and was investigating the city. All of the cost of living sites I visited claimed that New Haven was a fairly cheap place to live. I think it was said that I only needed to make about $28K to live in the same manner I do here. Can that possibly be true?
Posted by: Dennis on January 26, 2003 07:54 AMNew Haven is the bestest and cheapest place in the whole wide wooooooooorld.
Okay. That was a totally selfish lie to entrap you to moving there cuz that would rawk.
New Haven is much, much cheaper to live in than anywhere in Fairfield County (where I live). It's college town so that sort of lends itself to that. It's a nice town with a lot going on, I think. There are great restaurants, several very good bookstores and a really diverse cultural community that includes a lot of good theatres and museums. It's a 100 minute train to NYC (the same trains we took when you were here) and, believe it or not, a lot of people commute from there.
That said, could you live like you do in Chicago for $28k?! I can't imagine that that would be the case. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think there's any major city on the East Coast that is that cheap.
So are you still interested in the opening????!?!?
Posted by: mrw on January 26, 2003 08:11 AMHonolulu was my #1 spot. Guess that's about as close to Singapore as you can get in the States. Vegas was second, there's not a chance on that one. Sacramento, and L.A. were next. I've always loved California, but L.A. is not a likely destination for me. San Francisco is more up my alley.
