It's a scary world out there...

Well, I went to a "listening party" last night for the new Steve Earle album. It was at a very, very cool bookstore in Soho. It's my new favorite place to read. Anyhow, I was getting a coffee and a woman from Jersey whom I met at the Knitting Factory show recognized me. Now, you know me (well, that's not entirely true here anymore but I like that a LOT. Welcome!), I can make small-talk with anyone. This woman insisted that I go sit with her and her friends. Argh. They are the worst kind of fans that I know. "I saw Steve's son once...," "Steve's roadie Buck told me..." You know the type. I just wanted to drink my coffee and listen to the album.

I did get to listen to the album. It's good but not as good as the last three. It tries way too hard to be uber-liberal. Don't get me wrong, I'm uber-liberal. I just think Steve comes off as preachy. Have you all heard the "John Walker Blues" slack? If not, I'll share it here.

I realized something very disturbing though. We music snobs come in two categories - hipsters and nerds. I think I fall in the middle.

If there's only two categories, then you can't fall in the middle. Sorry pal, but you can't be both an Elvis Person AND a Beatles Person. It's one or the other. Just ask Quentin Tarantino.

Hi K,

Mike knows I harbor a 'slight' aversion to our easy-bake, fabricated mezzoculture - which is all Hollywood is about anymore. Tarantino is a cultural nazi.

Where am I going with this? ;-)

Oh yeah, Elvis, or Beatles. Nerds or hipsters. I'm taking Tom Waits advice these days: don't buy into anything. Just make your own music. The rougher, the better!

Ok, I'm not taking his advice totally to heart either...

But Steve Earle? Behind Elvis Costello, he's runnerup for this years #1 hack...;-)

I love yanking Mikey's chains..wish he'd get some nipple rings...he must be rueing the day he added his grunge puppy app...ok, enough from me! have a nice weekend youse guyz. d (& I do luv u)

Tarantino is worse than that - he's a one-note, pseudo-hipster, cultural nazi. "Pulp Fiction" was ground-breaking in its day. Note to Quentin - that was 1994.

Earle tries too hard to be relevant, I'll give you that. However, when he isn't being more earnest than Jim Varney he really does write some brilliant stuff.

As for the nip rings, wow. That's a frightening picture.

Well, the discussion is so elevated, that I'll throw in some potty humor... We all know our real favorite place to read...

Also, you can make small-talk with anyone until your ADD kicks in, then you're off to the races to find someone more interesting.

K.Britt stole my thought about there being no middle ground if there's only two kinds of snobs.

For what it's worth, I was only referencing Tarentino because I couldn't remember the name of Uma Thurman's character. And though I find Quentin a hipster doofus, I did enjoy his appearance last season on "Alias"
